CASKET ROBBERY - Interview zu Rituals Of Death
VÖ: 11.11.2022 / Blood Blast Distribution

LACK OF LIES: Ihr seid recht aktiv in den sozialen Medien.

Megan: Hallo!

LACK OF LIES: Euer zweites Album "Rituals Of Death" steht kurz vor der Veröffentlichung.

Dafür muss man so viele Opfer bringen.

LACK OF LIES: Die Hintergründe zu "Return To The Sky" fand ich sehr interessant. Was kannst du mir darüber sagen?

- of horror, occultism and death, polishing up the album in the Corona period and people's fear of what they don't know and what they don't understand -

With their brilliant and technically demanding full-length second strike "Rituals Of Death", the infernal death squad CASKET ROBBERY from Madison, Wisconsin have avoked a modern, sinister, aggressive and horror-infected Death Metal Monster. In order to give the Brutal Death Fivepiece a bit of support in Germany, which it undoubtedly deserves, I asked the Americans to answer a few questions. Frontwhip Megan Orvold-Scheider and her husband, band co-founder and string wizard Cory Scheider unreservedly agreed to do so. In the following lines you will find out what the two extreme metallers had to tell me right around CASKET ROBBERY.

CASKET ROBBERY - Interview for Rituals Of Death
RD: 11.11.2022 / Blood Blast Distribution

LACK OF LIES: You are quite active on social media. Nevertheless, I would say that you are not very well known in Germany yet. What is there to say about CASKET ROBBERY that every Death Metal fan in Germany should know about you?

Megan: Hello! We are a horror-influenced death metal band, and we would LOVE to come to Germany one day!

Cory: You’re gonna love the riffs!

LACK OF LIES: Your second album "Rituals Of Death" is about to be released. Why did it take so long to get published? There are at least six and a half years between the debut "Evolution Of Evil" and the current output. The new material was ready a long time ago, if I understood that correctly? What was the reason for that in detail and what else do you think is important to know about your new output?

Cory: We were just about ready to release and then covid hit, unfortunately it derailed our plans.  When we realized that it was going to be LONG time before things were normal we decided to keep searching for labels to release this and we even decided to touch up some of the production/recording/and mixing on the album.  The big factor was that we knew we didn’t want to release this until we could tour, so we took the time off to make this album even better.  We know our fans were aching for this, but also know they would appreciate the little “extra” we put into everything.  We are such a live/touring oriented band that we just did not want to release this until we could hit the road and meet and shake the hands of our fans that bought it.  We’re excited to be back to a normal schedule and are already writing for the next releases, which will not have any world altering delays! We’re ready to go!

LACK OF LIES: Does that maybe have something to do with the countless line-up changes in the past? CASKET ROBBERY has changed its band members like underpants in the past.

Cory: The lineup changes didn’t have much to do with delays. Fortunately we have had the same core members since our 2017 EP “The Ascension”. Them being Myself, Megan, and Troy as the constants and the main song writers.  We’ve got a great system down for recording and writing and since added Bryan Bykowski on bass and he has been an awesome addition to writing.  Troy is a phenomenal producer and has been a huge part of the sound and recording process on this release. So the changes have been mainly in the touring members because, well, it is difficult for anyone to tour.  You have to make so many sacrifices to do that.

LACK OF LIES: "Rituals Of Death" is much about Horror, the occult and of course about death. Is it a more playful handling with these themes, is there something like a common thread or is that less important to you?

Megan: Its always been really important to us to add that somewhat playful imagery in these heavier themes. That being said we’ve always been drawn to and taken inspiration from horror, the occult, and death. This album has produced some of the darkest material we’ve faced and we really utilized the uncertain time between 2020-2022 to really tap into that darkness in each of us.

Cory: Yea, we always have playful themes but there is a lot to unpack in this album as far as the vibe and feeling of the lyrics and musical themes.  Those dark times we went through are really in this album, and I think will be something we never forget every time we listen or play these songs.

LACK OF LIES: You had a powerful claymation video for "Bone Mother" produced. How did you come up with the idea of taking up the story of Baba Jaga (Yaga), which comes from Slavic mythology, and incorporating it into a musical concept? How do you know Baba Yaga?

Megan: I have always been fascinated with occult folklore and really love drawing imagery of that into my lyrics. The folklore surrounding Baba Yaga and the NUMEROUS modern-day depictions of her have really drawn me in. So I knew right away that I wanted to do a song on her. It kind of just flowed from that and turned into what it is now. Shayne Minott from Blood Budget Productions took full reign of the storyline of the video and really brought my lyrics and the story to life…he is AMAZING.

LACK OF LIES: I found the background to "Return To The Sky" very interesting. I think that's aimed a bit at the Tibetan sky burial, isn't it? What can you tell me about it?

Megan: It absolutely is. I was reading a book about various death rituals around the world and diving into different cultures and that fascinated me. The beauty of giving back to the earth and the cyclical nature of life and death through all creatures…is incredibly beautiful.

LACK OF LIES: You played the Tennessee Metal Devastation Festival at Beech Lake in Lexington in the so called Bible Belt (area of the USA dominated by Evangelical Protestantism) lately. I followed the happenings around this festival a bit. I could hardly believe that in 2022 there are still people who want to demonize heavy metal and ban festivals like this. There was even talk of festival opponents assuming something terrible was going to happen at the festival because of the passage "Devastation" in the title. What did you notice about it beforehand, at the festival and afterwards? And how did the festival go for you?

Megan: The festival was absolutely incredible. (Zachary Moonshine), Raven (Moonla) and their entire crew put on this festival and blew us away with how professionally things ran and how well we were taken care of. This festival was the highlight of our tour. We had the opportunity to meet so many people and make so many new fans and friends. I was so blown away by the amount of children and teenagers there and being able to meet so many of them was wonderful. We dont get the opportunity in the venues we play at to be “all ages” a lot so that was something fun and seeing younger generations enjoying what we do is so very humbling and something I do not take for granted.

LACK OF LIES: There was also some kind of "Satanic Panic" from the local church in Lexington, TN over the lyrics of "Annibelle's Hell". What was it about? I mean, I know the lyrics, but you can also overdo it. How did you become aware of this fact and did you get in contact with members of the church to explain it to you or would such a thing be rather counterproductive in your eyes?

Megan: So, ‘Annibelle’s Hell’ is before my time as vocalist(though I am the voice of her in the song). I received a bunch of notifications that a group of people had dug into the band and the lyrics and were having a field day with this song. Anyone who takes one look at any of our pages knows that we are heavily influenced by horror…and that song, in particular is heavily influenced by just that…a horror movie and the themes in it. So all of that was pretty silly. But…some people are always going to fear what they dont know and dont understand. We’re just going to be us, and our reputation both professionally and personally speaks for itself in this industry.

LACK OF LIES: You were recently on the Blood & Blasphemy Tour with SUMMONER'S CIRCLE in the USA. Which impressions do you remember particularly positively or negatively?

Megan: This tour was a blast from start to finish. Summoners Circle is a group of incredibly talented musicians and incredibly kind people. Watching them perform every night was an absolute treat. We had so much fun with them every single night. We’re looking forward to doing more with them in the very near future. This was our first tour back since the shutdown and it was wonderful. We’ve toured the south numerous times pre-covid so getting back down there and playing new venues and seeing old friends was really terrific. We are very ready to hit the road again soon.

LACK OF LIES: How did you get the French Nuclear Blast/Believe sub label Blood Blast Distribution? Is it even a real label or more of a pure distributor?

Cory: Blood Blast is a distributor.  You see more and more bands going this route. We really had a great time working on this release with them and it’s been a very good response from when we announced the signing up until the release.

LACK OF LIES: What else can we expect from CASKET ROBBERY in the near and distant future? And are there any plans for a European Tour?

Cory: We are hoping to get to Europe soon.  We were on the verge of announcing a European tour right when the pandemic hit and unfortunately the pandemic just reset all of our plans.  Much like many other bands that we know that were working hard right around 2020. We’re rebuilding things and we’ll get there as soon as we can!  We are excited about the response of this album in Europe, we think it’ll be a great time.
