Sechs Jahre sind seit dem letzten Brachialwerk "Purgatory", der Montréal Bad Boys DESPISED ICON ins Land gezogen. Nun steht das siebte Progressive Deathcore/Hardcore-Inferno "Shadow Work", der 2002 gegründeten kanadischen Todesbrut, endlich in den Startlöchern. Mit einem wilden, furiosen und ungestümen Kick in den Allerwertesten öffnet das 36-minütige Stahlgewitter seine Pforten. "Shadow Work" baut enormen Druck auf und pusht unerbittlich nach vorne. Dabei galvanisieren DESPISED ICON ihr kompromissloses Extrem-Eisen hin und wieder auch mit melodischen Signalen und machen schon mal Math Metal-Einflüsse geltend. Mit zweistimmigen Gesangseruptionen von Alex Erian und Steve Marois, sowie pervertierter Growl-, Grunt- 'n' Pig Squeeling-Unterstützung von Matt Honeycutt (KUBLAI KHAN TX) beim zweiten Track "Over My Dead Body" und Scott Ian Lewis (CARNIFEX), im Schlagabtausch mit Tom Barber (CHELSEA GRIN) beim kompromisslosen "Reaper", spuckt das Extrem Metal Sextett Blut, Gift und Galle. Wow, was für ein bitterböses und teuflisches Powerpack!
DESPISED ICON haben die unterschiedlichsten Techniken und Timebending-Sequenzen, sowie ihre kurzweilige, mitreißende und vielschichtige musikalische DNA absolut überzeugend rübergebracht. Alles wurde passgenau aufeinander abgestimmt. Neben den wütenden Vocalperformances, die sich von Growling und Grunting über Screaming, einigen wenigen cleanen Gesangseinlagen, dem, beim Hardcore typischen Revolting Crowd Roaring und dem unerlässlichen Pig Squeeling erstrecken, erzeugt der beinahe unmenschliche Poly- und Crossrhythmik-Schlagzeugtraffic von Ballermaschine Alex „Grind“ Pelletier eine komplexe klangtechnische Dichte. Nicht zuletzt im Gitarrenspiel bedienen sich die beiden Sixstringer Éric Jarrin und Ben Landreville bis zum Erbrechen tiefergelegter, schartiger bis alarmierend-squeeliger Gitarrenauswüchse, kurzer, aber eindrucksvoller Soli, voluminösem Mahlstrom-Riffing und fetten, fleischigen Breakdowns.
Dabei beweist auch Tiefton-Wizard Sebastian Piché, innerhalb der elf Tracks die "Shadow Work" zu bieten hat, eine flinke und filigrane Fingerfertigkeit. Während das arschtight arrangierte "Over My Dead Body", das ausgefallene und extrem geil performte "The Apparition", sowie mein absoluter Album-Fave "Reaper" mit seinem Stakkato-Bree-Vocaling, schwer nach vorne gehen, hätte ich auf das, mit französischem Gesang distinguierte, obsolete, aber auch nur knapp 1 ½ Minuten trudelnde "ContreCoeur" gerne verzichten können. Aber das ist auch schon das einzige Manko des ansonsten rundum gelungenen full-length Fangeisens.
"Shadow Work" ist ein facettenreicher Panzerbrecher geworden, bei dem es viel zu entdecken gibt. So warten die aufeinanderfolgenden "Omen of Misfortune" und "Obsessive Compulsive Disaster" mit einem vergleichsweise hohen Hardcoreanteil, inklusive dem bereits angesprochenen Revolting Crowd Roaring auf. Produziert wurde das hochwertig differenzierte und wuchtige Brachialwerk "Shadow Work" von Brüllwürfel Alex Erian und Axtkämpfer Éric Jarrin. Für Mix und Master zeigte sich erneut Christian Donaldson verantwortlich, der unter anderem bereits für INGESTED, SHADOW OF INTENT, SUFFOCATION und seine eigene Band CRYPTOPSY an der elektronischen Soundbar in Montreals Klangschmiede "The Grid" tätig war. DESPISED ICON haben mit der technischen Deathcore-/Hardcore-/Brutal Death Metal-Wuchtbrumme "Shadow Work" trotz der enormen Härte ein abwechslungsreiches Stück Extrem Metal-Geschichte geschrieben. This is hard-hitting Montreal Deathcore...that bursts your soul out!

Six years have passed since the last brutal album "Purgatory", by Montreal-based bad boys DESPISED ICON. Now, the seventh progressive deathcore/hardcore inferno "Shadow Work" by the Canadian deathspawn, founded in 2002, is finally ready to launch. With a wild, furious and impetuous kick to the buttocks, the 36-minute steel thunderstorm opens its doors. "Shadow Work" builds enormous pressure and pushes relentlessly forward. DESPISED ICON occasionally galvanize their uncompromising, extreme metal with melodic signals, occasionally revealing math metal influences. With two-part vocal eruptions from Alex Erian and Steve Marois, as well as perverted growling, grunting, and pig-squeezing support from Matt Honeycutt (KUBLAI KHAN TX) on the second track, "Over My Dead Body", plus Scott Ian Lewis (CARNIFEX) in a slugfest with Tom Barber (CHELSEA GRIN) on the uncompromising "Reaper", the extreme metal sextet spits blood, venom and bile. Wow, what a bitterly evil and devilish powerpack!
DESPISED ICON convincingly conveyed a wide variety of techniques and timebending sequences, as well as their entertaining, captivating and multifaceted musical DNA. Everything is perfectly coordinated. Alongside the furious vocal performances, ranging from growling and grunting to screaming, a few clean vocal interludes, the revolting crowd roaring typical of hardcore and the indispensable pig squeeling, the almost inhuman poly- and cross-rhythmic drumming of gunmachine Alex "Grind" Pelletier creates a complex sonic density. Not least in the guitar playing, the two six-stringers Éric Jarrin and Ben Landreville utilize lowered to the point of vomiting, a range of low-pitched, jagged, and alarmingly squeely guitar excesses, short but impressive solos, voluminous maelstrom riffing, and fat, meaty breakdowns. Low tone magician Sebastian Piché also demonstrates a nimble and delicate dexterity across the eleven tracks that "Shadow Work" offers. While the incredibly tightly arranged "Over My Dead Body", the unusual and extremely well-performed "The Apparition" and my absolute album favorite "Reaper" with its staccato, bree-vocals, are all powerfully forward-moving, I could have happily done without the obsolete "ContreCoeur", with its distinguished French vocals, which only spins a minute and a half. But that's the only drawback of this otherwise thoroughly successful full-length leghold trap.
"Shadow Work" has become a multifaceted tank buster with much to discover. The consecutive tracks "Omen of Misfortune" and "Obsessive Compulsive Disaster" boast a comparatively high hardcore content, including the aforementioned Revolting Crowd Roaring. The highly differentiated and powerful brute force "Shadow Work" was produced by roar-cube Alex Erian and axefighter Éric Jarrin. Christian Donaldson, who has previously worked with INGESTED, SHADOW OF INTENT, SUFFOCATION, and his own band CRYPTOPSY, was once again responsible for the mix and mastering at the electronic soundbar in Montreal's sound forge "The Grid". Despite its enormous heaviness, DESPISED ICON have written a diverse piece of extreme metal history with the technical deathcore/hardcore/brutal death metal blast "Shadow Work". This is hard-hitting Montreal Deathcore...that bursts your soul out!
