Zu ihrem 20-jährigen Bandjubiläum hauen uns die Emsdettener Melodeath/Groove Metaller NEW WORLD DEPRESSION Album Nummer sieben, in Form von "Abysmal Void" um die Ohren. Mit unverkennbarem John Tardy-Einschlag in Sascha “Hütte” Twardons guttural-geröchelten Vocalperformance, zockt das nordrhein-westfälische Quintett seinen straighten, wie auch melodischen Old School Death "in the mood of OBITUARY meets, BOLT THROWER, meets DISBELIEF". Das klingt soweit ja auch erst mal alles andere als schlecht. Auch gibt es handwerklich an den zehn neuen Tracks, die das 41:55-minütige "Abysmal Void" bereithält, eigentlich nicht so viel auszusetzen, grooven und fetzen sie doch ordentlich aus den Speakern. Nach einigen Durchläufen fällt mir jedoch die kaum von der Hand zu weisende Gleichförmigkeit der Songs zu stark ins Gewicht. Auch fehlt mir das letzte Quäntchen an Bissigkeit und Durchschlagskraft, gerade wenn es in die durchaus abwechslungsreichen melodischen Passagen übergeht.
Wenn hier und da auch mal ein SLAYER-Riff durchblitzt, gehen mir bei den NRW-Death Metal Dinos einfach die richtig starken Highlights ab. Und obschon NEW WORLD DEPRESSION von schleppend bis fastpaced alles gegeben, was der traditionsbewusste Death Metaller hören will, plänkelt "Abysmal Void" auf Dauer stets im gleichen Fahrwasser vor sich hin.
Die Riffs und Drumlines sind mir einfach zu monoton und abgetragen, als dass sie einen Angriff aus der Mottenkiste überleben würden. Wundert mich eigentlich, dass Sounddesigner Jörg Uken von seiner elektronischen Werkbank im Soundlodge Studio aus, nicht effektiver in das musikalische Geschehen eingegriffen hat. "Abysmal Void" ist sicherlich kein schlechtes Album geworden, man sollte sich aber auch nicht zu viel davon versprechen. Dafür ist die Konkurrenz einfach viel zu groß!

To celebrate their 20th band anniversary, Emsdetten-based melodeath/groove metallers NEW WORLD DEPRESSION are smashing their seventh album "Abysmal Void" at us. With an unmistakable John Tardy influence in Sascha "Hütte" Twardon's guttural, raspy vocal performance, the North Rhine-Westphalian quintet delivers their straight-forward, yet melodic, old-school death metal "in the mood of OBITUARY meets BOLT THROWER meets DISBELIEF." That doesn't sound bad at all. Technically, there's not much to criticize about the ten new tracks on the 41:55-minute "Abysmal Void," as they groove and rip through the speakers with a decent amount of power. After a few listens, however, the undeniable monotony of the songs becomes too much of a burden for me. I also feel that it lacks that last bit of bite and impact, especially when it transitions into the quite varied melodic passages.
While a SLAYER riff might flash through here and there, I simply miss the truly strong highlights from these NRW death metal dinosaurs. And although NEW WORLD DEPRESSION delivers everything a tradition-conscious death metal fan could want to hear, from slow-paced to fast-paced, "Abysmal Void" plods along in the same old vein over time. The riffs and drum lines are simply too monotonous and worn-out for me to survive an attack from the mothbox. I'm actually surprised that sound designer Jörg Uken didn't intervene more effectively in the musical proceedings from his electronic workbench in the Soundlodge Studio. "Abysmal Void" certainly isn't a bad album, but you shouldn't expect too much from it either. The competition is simply too fierce!
