Die dritte HM2-Kreischsäge "Defiance", der Paderborner Todesbrut NIGHTBEARER, bietet postapokalyptische Klangkosmen klassischer schwedischer Prägung, welche sequenziell hart an der Peripherie zum Death 'n' Roll entlang galoppieren. Die Ostwestfalen kreieren melodische, mit Know-how arrangierte Kompositionen, die trotz der harten Gangart auf Zugänglichkeit bedacht sind und häufig ins Epische abdriften. Hinter der düsteren Grundausstattung steckt jedoch zumeist ein dynamisch nach vorne preschender Druck. Das schafft Dramaturgie, Charme und eine soundtechnisch dichte Atmosphäre, die an der elektronischen Werkbank verfeinert und unter anderem mit subtilen choralen Soundlayers aufgepimpt wurde. NIGHTBEARERs traditionsbewusster Göteborg-Elchtod wird dabei von belletristischen Themen aus den Bereichen Fantasy, Grimdark und Horror untermalt. So ließ sich das, 2017 erstmals auf der Charta erschienene NRW-Aggro-Fivepiece, im Falle von "Defiance", von der "His Dark Materials"-Trilogie (auch als "Der Goldene Kompass" - Die Trilogie bekannt), des englischen Autors Sir Philip Pullman inspirieren.
Nach dem kurzen Intro "Dust" ballern uns NIGHTBEARER mit "His Dark Materials" brachiale Blastsalven um die Ohren. Neben ihrer fetzigen Gangart und dem schartigen Riffing, wurde der zweite und eigentliche Einstiegssong, mit einem leicht monumentalen Touch versehen. Einerseits heizt Michael Torkas mächtiges Organ den Zuhörern, mit seinem variabel eingesetzten, dunklem und kräftigem Death Growling mächtig ein, andererseits metaphorisiert es nicht selten, innerhalb derselben Strophe, zu langgezogenen, galligen und häretischen Gesangslinien. Das derbe, zumeist recht schnelle Riffing von Tristan Schubert, sowie die technische Finesse von Dominik Hellmuths (BURDEN OF GRIEF) arschtight angeschlagenen Leadgitarren, sind exzellent durchdacht und wohl dosiert eingesetzt. Wie beim überwiegend rapido gezockten Titeltrack "Defiance", bei "One Church over All" oder bei "Reign Supreme" schwingen sich die Gitarrenläufe der beiden Herren schon mal in astrale Hemisphären, um das Auditorium unmittelbar abzuholen und auf eine immersive Reise in die Weiten des Kosmos mitzunehmen.
Die vielschichtigen, alles in Grund und Boden hämmernden Drumworks von Manuel Lüke (ebenfalls BURDEN OF GRIEF) feuern eine dynamische Supernova nach der anderen ab, dessen Sternenstaub Florian Böhmfelds niederfrequent prattelnder Fourstringer ordentlich aufwirbelt. NIGHTBEARER steuern zwischendurch aber auch Oasen der Ruhe an, um nach kurzen Einwürfen wieder voll und ganz durchzustarten. Das sorgt für Abwechslung und Kurzweil innerhalb der einzelnen Kompositionen, sowie der gesamten Songauswahl, die in ihrer Gesamtbetrachtung wie ein Konzeptalbum anmutet.
Andererseits erinnern Bollwerke, wie das mächtige Blastgewitter "Dying Knows No Bounds" oder das dogmatische, gebieterische und mit nuanciertem Hang zum Bombast ausgestattete "Under the Sun of War" in der gesanglich düsteren Variante schon mal an die Anfangszeiten von HYPOCRISY. Lediglich das finstere, mit 09:38 Minuten ein wenig an Überlänge leidende "Ascension", ist mir in seinen ausladenden, instrumentalen Ausführungen etwas zu langatmig geraten. Sicherlich ein stimmig aufgebauter Track, der in jedem Fall für Kurzweil sorgt, meines Erachtens aber gerade im Mittelteil unnötig viel Fahrt rausnimmt. Das soll aber den Gesamteindruck der zehn Tracks, des vielseitigen und rundum gelungenen Düsterwerks "Defiance", welches von Lead Gitarrist Dominik Hellmuth, in seinen Hellmouth Studios zu Warburg aufgenommen, sowie arschtight abgemischt und gemastert wurde, keinesfalls schmälern. Die Paderborner Extrem Metal Connaisseurs haben, innerhalb der 46:07 Minuten die NIGHTBEARER 3.0 offeriert, fantasiegeschwängerte und markante Soundscapes 1 A umgesetzt und zu ihrer eigenständigen Schwedentod-Adaption gefunden. Det här är jävligt hård, melodisk dödsmetall!!!

The third HM2 screamsaw, "Defiance," by Paderborn-based death brood NIGHTBEARER, offers post-apocalyptic soundscapes in a classic Swedish style, sequentially galloping along the periphery of death 'n' roll. The East Westphalians create melodic, expertly arranged compositions that, despite their heavy nature, are focused on accessibility and frequently drift into the epic. Behind the dark underpinnings, however, lies a dynamic, forward-rushing force. This creates drama, charm, and a sonically dense atmosphere, refined on the electronic workbench, enhanced with subtle choral sound layers, among other things. NIGHTBEARER's tradition-conscious Gothenburg-moose-death is underscored by fictional themes from the genres of fantasy, grimdark, and horror. For example, the NRW Aggro five-piece, which first appeared on the Charta in 2017, was inspired, in the case of "Defiance", by the "His Dark Materials" trilogy (also known as "The Golden Compass" - The Trilogy) by the English author Sir Philip Pullman.
After the short intro "Dust" NIGHTBEARER bombards us with "His Dark Materials" brutal blasts. In addition to their edgy pace and jagged riffs, the second and actual opening song has a slightly monumental touch. On the one hand, Michael Torka's mighty voice fires up the listeners with its variably deployed, dark, and powerful death growl, on the other hand it often metamorphoses into drawn-out, venomous, and heretical vocal lines within the same verse. Tristan Schubert's rough, mostly quite fast riffing, as well as the technical finesse of Dominik Hellmuth's (BURDEN OF GRIEF) ass-tight lead guitar, are excellently thought out and well-measured. As in the predominantly rapid-fire title track "Defiance", in "One Church over All" or with "Reign Supreme", the two men's guitar runs occasionally soar into astral hemispheres, immediately captivating the audience and taking them on an immersive journey into the vastness of the cosmos. The multi-layered, pounding drums of Manuel Lüke (also of BURDEN OF GRIEF) fire off one dynamic supernova after another, whose stardust is thoroughly stirred up by Florian Böhmfeld's low-frequency, rattling four-string guitar. NIGHTBEARER also occasionally seek out oases of calm, only to launch into full throttle again after brief interludes. This ensures variety and entertainment within the individual compositions, as well as the entire song selection, which viewed as a whole, feels like a concept album.
Besides that, bulwarks like the mighty blast thunderstorm "Dying Knows No Bounds" or the dogmatic, imperious and equipped with a nuanced tendency towards bombast "Under the Sun of War," with its dark vocals are reminiscent of HYPOCRISY's early days. Only sinister "Ascension" which at 9:38 minutes is suffering from a little excess length, seems a bit too long-winded for me with its expansive instrumental arrangements. While it's certainly a coherently constructed track that definitely provides entertainment, in my opinion it unnecessarily slows down the pace, especially in the middle section. This however, should in no way diminish the overall impression of the ten tracks, the versatile and thoroughly successful gloomy work "Defiance," which was recorded by lead guitarist Dominik Hellmuth at his Hellmouth Studios in Warburg, as well as tightly mixed and mastered. The Paderborn-based extreme metal connoisseurs have masterfully crafted imaginative and striking soundscapes on NIGHTBEARER 3.0 in the 46:07 minutes that they offer, creating their own unique adaptation of Swedish death metal. Det här är jävligt hård, melodisk dödsmetall!!!
