Das fünfte Langeisen "Loss", der portugiesischen Ambient Post-Black Metaller GAEREA, ist einmal mehr eine astrale Reise, die zum Eintauchen, Wegdriften und Träumen einlädt. Doch diesmal lässt sie mich etwas zwiegespalten zurück. Trotz der immer wieder durchringenden Härte hat man die Bandagen etwas gelockert und ist im Allgemeinen noch zugänglicher und einfühlsamer geworden. Das Five-Piece aus Porto steuert innerhalb der ersten fünf Kompositionen regelmäßig Oasen der Ruhe an, die häufiger als zuvor mit Klargesangspassagen versehen werden, von der ursprünglichen Grundausrichtung GAEREAs jedoch nicht großartig abweichen. Obschon die 2016 gegründeten Schwarz-Metaller 46 Minuten lang hochwertiges musikalisches Material abliefern, merkt man "Loss" doch an, dass GAEREA in der Gesamtschau gefälliger klingen wollen. Dass man sich auf diese Weise, mit dem Integrieren diverser Post-Rock-Elemente etwas mehr dem Mainstream anbiedert, ist also unüberhörbar. Gerade in der zweiten Hälfte des Albums, also ab dem lahmen und beinahe einschläfernd wirkenden "Cyclone" wird es vergleichsweise fad und nichtssagend. GAEREA sollten diesen eingeschlagenen Weg, ihrer musikalischen Seele zuliebe, nicht konsequent weiter gehen, sonst wird es irgendwann einmal in Weichflötengedöns ausarten.
Man soll mich an dieser Stelle bitte nicht falsch verstehen, denn gerade das Material der ersten fünf Kompositionen auf "Loss" ist definitiv High End. Hier werden Einfühlsamkeit und Härte, Euphonie und Kakophonie, Herz und Verstand zu bewundernswert koalierenden, atmosphärischen und einnehmenden Soundkulissen zusammengeführt. GAEREA lassen viele elektronische Elemente und Lautstärkedynamiken in ihren Signaturestyle einfließen, der schon mal mit Anleihen der Space Opera liebäugelt und bis zum angesprochenen "Cyclone" wie Ebbe und Flut ineinandergreift. Auch das gemächliche "Nomad", mit seinem starken und eingängigen Refrain wird live sicherlich gut ankommen und zum Mitsingen animieren, doch mangelt es hier an dem oftmals proklamierten Alleinstellungsmerkmal und der individuellen Kreativität. Auch die immer wieder in Lethargie verfallende und massenkompatible Schlussagonie "Stardust" zieht den Schnitt des Albums meiner Meinung nach runter. An dieser Stelle möchte ich die bezeichnende und wie die Faust aufs Auge passende Aussage des Info-Sheets zitieren: „Es gibt Refrains, die so eingängig und leidenschaftlich sind wie die besten Rock- und Metal-Songs. Doch trotz des emotional aufgeladenen Lärms ist es unverkennbar GAEREA.“

The fifth longplayer "Loss" by Portuguese ambient post-black metal band GAEREA is once again an astral journey that invites you to immerse yourself, drift away, and dream. But this time, it leaves me feeling somewhat torn. Despite the recurring harshness, the band has loosened up a bit and become more accessible and sensitive overall. Within the first five compositions, the five-piece from Porto regularly heads for oases of calm, which are more frequently accompanied by clean vocals than before, but do not deviate greatly from GAEREA's original direction. Although the black metal band, founded in 2016, delivers 46 minutes of high-quality musical material, it is noticeable on "Loss" that GAEREA wants to sound more pleasing overall. It is unmistakable that by integrating various post-rock elements, they are trying to appeal a little more to the mainstream. Especially in the second half of the album, starting with the lame and almost soporific "Cyclone", it becomes comparatively bland and meaningless. For the sake of their musical soul, GAEREA should not continue down this path, otherwise it will eventually degenerate into softflute-nonsense.
Please don't misunderstand me here, because the material on the first five compositions on "Loss" is definitely high-end. Here, sensitivity and harshness, euphony and cacophony, heart and mind are brought together to form admirably cohesive, atmospheric, and captivating soundscapes. GAEREA incorporate many electronic elements and volume dynamics into their signature style, which sometimes flirts with space opera and, up to the aforementioned "Cyclone", intertwines like ebb and flow. The leisurely "Nomad", with its strong and catchy chorus, is sure to go down well live and encourage sing-alongs, however, it lacks the often-proclaimed unique selling point and individual inventiveness. In my opinion, the repeatedly lethargic and mass-compatible final agony "Stardust" also drags down the album's average. At this point, I would like to quote the apt and fitting statement from the info sheet: “There are choruses that are as catchy and passionate as the best rock and metal songs. But despite the emotionally charged noise, it is unmistakably GAEREA.”
