Black Walnut, Pennsylvania, Mitte März 1988. Als sich Pastor Cap durch einen Schneesturm zu Bonnie, der todkranken Frau von Sheriff Lester kämpft, kracht ihm um ein Haar eine junge Frau frontal in den Wagen. Cap rettet die dennoch verunfallte, offensichtlich taubstumme Frau, die sich als Tess vorstellt und vor irgendetwas oder irgendjemanden auf der Flucht zu sein scheint. Er nimmt sie vorübergehend in seine Obhut, bringt sie im Pfarrhaus unter, fühlt sich aber mehr und mehr zu ihr hingezogen. Doch nicht nur Cap steht auf die exotisch anmutende Tess, die das keine Örtchen Black Walnut allmählich aus dem Gleichgewicht zu hebeln scheint. Als sich die junge Frau Cap gegenüber anvertraut und er das Unfassbare erfährt, das ihr widerfahren ist, scheinen Welten miteinander zu kollidieren. In der weiteren Folge laden viele Handelnde große Schuld auf sich.

In seinen ländlich geprägten Noirs nutzt Samuel W. Gailey eine bildhafte, immersive und vitale Sprache, wie in einem bösen Traum. Dabei führt der US-amerikanische Schriftsteller generell ein üppiges Lokalkolorit im Gepäck, das seinen Romanen eine atmosphärische und emotionale Tiefe verleiht. Die empathisch aufgebauten, von einer melancholischen Tristesse getragenen Plots, beschäftigen sich in der Regel mit gescheiterten Existenzen, versehrten oder verletzten Menschen, ihrer Verzweiflung, der Gewalt, der sie ausgesetzt sind, sowie den Aspekten im Leben, die sie an die Grenzen ihrer Leidensfähigkeit führen. Häufig ist es das Unausgesprochene, das dem Leser im Kopf bleibt. Es sind eben die verstörenden Bilder, die Gailey seinen Lesern in den Kopf pflanzt, die sie mitleiden lassen und noch lange nachwirken. Gerade weil sein dritter Roman "Komm mit mir" keinen Kriminalfall darstellt, sondern eher das Thema Rural Drama zum Leitmotiv erklärt, steigert sich die Emotionalität im Verlauf der Geschichte ins Unermessliche. Die rücksichtslosen Verletzungen seelischer, wie körperliche Art, die sich Menschen zufügen, der Kampf mit den Dämonen der Vergangenheit, sowie die Endgültigkeit fataler Entscheidungen werden hier zum Fundament. Dabei gibt es auch ein kurzes Wiedersehen mit dem introvertierten und mental retardierten Danny Bedford aus dem Waschsalon in "Tiefer Winter". 

Ein weiterer Erzählstrang handelt von Wade, Maggie und ihrem Sohn Butch. Den Respekt längst voreinander verloren, läuft ihre Ehe allmählich aus dem Ruder. Eigentlich geht es ihnen gut, doch sie haben einander nichts mehr zu sagen und bemerken darüber nicht, wie sich der 14-jährige Butch zum Negativen verändert. Auch Robin, der rechten Hand von Pfarrer Cap, ihrem Ehemann Chuck und den drei gemeinsamen Kindern ergeht es nicht viel besser. Finanzielle Not, Missbrauch, Gewalt und Alkoholismus stehen bei Ihnen an der Tagesordnung. Bis Robin eines Tages eine fatale Entscheidung trifft, die ihr Leben grundlegend verändert. Allmählich wird offenbar, dass sämtliche Akteure in Samuel W. Gaileys "Komm mit mir" alle etwas gemein haben, denn sie alle leben eine Lebenslüge, die sie irgendwann einholen wird!

Erstmals im Jahre 2023 unter dem Titel "Come Away From Her" im amerikanischen Original veröffentlicht, rollt Samuel W. Gailey sein emotionales, tief unter die Haut gehendes Gesellschafts- und Sozialdrama "Komm mit mir" ganz gemächlich aus. Der Autor, der in einem Provinznest im Nordosten Pennsylvanias aufwuchs und bereits in der Filmproduktion als Drehbuchautor arbeitete, kennt das Kleinstadtleben mit all seinen Facetten und Widrigkeiten. Das Geflecht und die Zusammenhänge der Menschen, die in der beschaulichen Siedlung im Wyoming County leben, mit ihren alltäglichen Familien- und Kleinstadtproblemen, hat Gailey in traurige, dennoch heimelige Worte gefasst. Auf einfühlsame und tragische Weise bringt uns der Ausnahmeautor, der heute auf der abgelegenen Orcas Island im Pazifischen Nordwesten lebt, auf seinen 288 Seiten das harte (Über-)leben in dem spärlichen Milieu, abgekapselt vom restlichen Amerika, nahe.

Black Walnut, Pennsylvania, mid-March 1988. As Pastor Cap battles his way through a snowstorm to reach Bonnie, Sheriff Lester’s terminally ill wife, a young woman nearly crashes head-on into his car. Cap rescues the woman, who caused nevertheless an accident and appears to be deaf and mute. She introduces herself as Tess and seems to be on the run from something or someone. He takes her in temporarily, putting her up in the parsonage, but finds himself increasingly drawn to her. But Cap isn’t the only one drawn to the exotic-looking Tess, who seems to be gradually throwing the small town of Black Walnut off balance. When the young woman confides in Cap and he learns the unimaginable things that have happened to her, worlds seem to collide. As the story unfolds, many characters take on a heavy burden of guilt.

In his rural noir novels, Samuel W. Gailey employs a vivid, immersive, and dynamic prose style, as if in a nightmare. The American author generally brings a rich sense of local color to his work, lending his novels an atmospheric and emotional depth. The empathetically constructed plots, carried by a melancholic gloom, typically deal with failed lives, broken or wounded people, their despair, the violence to which they are exposed, and the aspects of life that push them to the limits of their endurance. Often, it is the unspoken that lingers in the reader’s mind. It is precisely the disturbing images that Gailey plants in his readers’ minds that make them empathize and linger long after the story ends. Precisely because his third novel "Komm mit mir" does not present a criminal case but rather declares rural drama its central theme, the emotional intensity escalates immeasurably as the story unfolds. The ruthless emotional and physical wounds people inflict on one another, the struggle with the demons of the past, and the finality of fatal decisions form the foundation here. There is also a brief reunion with the introverted and mentally disabled Danny Bedford from the laundromat in "Tiefer Winter".

Another storyline follows Wade, Maggie, and their son Butch. Having long since lost respect for one another, their marriage is gradually falling apart. On the surface, they seem to be doing fine, but they have nothing left to say to each other and fail to notice how 14-year-old Butch is changing for the worse. Things aren’t much better for Robin, Pastor Cap’s right-hand woman, her husband Chuck, and their three children. Financial hardship, abuse, violence, and alcoholism are the order of the day for them. Until one day, Robin makes a fateful decision that fundamentally changes her life. It gradually becomes clear that all the characters in Samuel W. Gailey’s "Komm mit mir" have something in common: they are all living a lie that will eventually catch up with them!

First published in 2023 under the title "Come Away From Her" in its original American edition, Samuel W. Gailey unfolds his emotional, deeply moving social drama "Komm mit mir" at a leisurely pace. The author, who grew up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania and has previously worked in film production as a screenwriter, knows small-town life in all its facets and hardships.
