"Etheric Realms of the Night" wurde die vierte Schwurbelkiste der US Progressive/Melodic Black/Deather IATT betitelt. Es ist ein unkonventionelles, experimentelles, progressives, folkloristisches, phasenweise regelrecht verspieltes Black Metal Album geworden, welches die Hörerschaft schon mal in atonale jazzig-rockige Gefilde entführt, dabei jedoch stets authentisch bleibt. Mit diesem eigensinnigen, aber passgenauen Stilmix kann man IATT durchaus ein gewisses Alleinstellungsmerkmal attestieren. Im Vordergrund steht jedoch stets der dynamische Flow ihres anmutigen und düster gehaltenen Schwarzmetalls. Um es mit den eigenen Worten der Band zu formulieren: „Jeder Titel ist sorgfältig komponiert, um verschiedene Phasen und Elemente des Traumzustands darzustellen – vom Eintauchen in den Schlaf bis hin zu dem chaotischen neuen Bereich der Existenz.“ So kommen bei dem Fourpiece aus Philadelphia, das von 2008 bis 2018 unter dem ausgeschriebenen Monicker "I Am the Trireme" unterwegs war, auch Instrumente, wie Flöte, Harfe, Saxophon oder auch mal ein ganzes Orchester zum Einsatz.
Wie der Titel des ersten Tracks "Drift Away" bereits andeutet, lädt das sechs Gesangsstücke, sowie das Instrumental "Hypnos" umfassende und 48:26 Minuten wirbelnde "Etheric Realms of the Night" zum Wegdriften, tief in die ätherischen Reiche der Nacht, ein. Das langgezogene, biestig-bissige und gallige Black Metal Screaming von Bassist und Frontkotztüte Jay Briscoe transformiert sich hierbei schon mal in gebieterische Black/Death Gefilde, welche sequenziell auch als Vocaldoubling aufgenommen wurden. Die zumeist euphonische Orchestration von Gitarrist Alec Pezzano dient den einzelnen Tracks dabei oftmals als unterstützendes Beiwerk oder leitet sie ein, begegnet IATTs schlüssiger, oftmals verqueren Experimentalität, aber auf einer musikalisch divergenten Ebene krasser Kontradiktion.
Dennoch haben Philadelphias Extreme-Metal-Alchemisten den Bogen raus, diese scheinbare Dysfunktionalität spannend und schlüssig zu inszenieren. Joe Cantamessa unterstützt seinen zweiten Gitarristen dabei zusätzlich mit seinem Sixstringer. Das arschtighte und anpassungswillige Drumplay von Schlagwerker Paul Cole pumpt dabei den Wust an technischer Finesse voran. Es steckt viel Herzblut und eine spürbare Affinität in den einzelnen Kompositionen, die sich schon mal in einen kurzweiligen, kakophonischen Wahn steigern können. Hierbei wird auch immer mal wieder dezent mit Lautstärkedynamiken hantiert. IATT lassen ihrem Auditorium viel Raum zur Entfaltung, Interpretation und Inspiration. Dass diese Extravaganz Herz und Seele hat, beweist auch das sechste Stück "Walk Amongst". Das atmosphärische Saxophonspiel und der Ambient Black Metal passen hier zusammen, wie Arsch auf Eimer. Das, über jeden Zweifel erhabene Mixing und Mastering stammt abermals von Marcos Cerutti, dem brasilianischen Co-founder ihres Labels Black Lion Productions.

"Etheric Realms of the Night" is the title of the fourth meander box by the US progressive/melodic black/death metal band IATT. It has turned out to be an unconventional, experimental, progressive, folkloric, and at times downright playful black metal album that occasionally transports the listener into atonal, jazzy-rock realms, yet always remains authentic. With this idiosyncratic but perfectly tailored mix of styles, IATT can certainly be said to have a unique selling point. However, the dynamic flow of their graceful and dark black metal always takes center stage. To put it in the band’s own words: “Each track is carefully composed to depict different phases and elements of the dream state—from drifting off to sleep to the chaotic new realm of existence.” Thus, the Philadelphia-based four-piece, which performed under the full moniker “I Am the Trireme” from 2008 to 2018, also incorporates instruments such as the flute, harp, saxophone, and even an entire orchestra at times.
As the title of the first track, "Drift Away" already suggests, the 48:26-minute whirlwind that is "Etheric Realms of the Night", comprising six vocal tracks as well as the instrumental "Hypnos", invites you to drift away, deep into the etheric realms of the night. The drawn-out, beastly, snarling, and vitriolic black metal screams of bassist and frontman Jay Briscoe occasionally transform into commanding black/death metal realms, which were also recorded sequentially as vocal overdubs. The mostly euphonious orchestration by guitarist Alec Pezzano often serves as a supporting accompaniment to the individual tracks or introduces them, encountering IATT’s coherent, often twisted experimentalism, yet on a musically divergent level, a stark contradiction. Nevertheless, Philadelphia’s extreme metal alchemists have mastered the art of staging this apparent dysfunctionality in an exciting and coherent way. Joe Cantamessa further supports his second guitarist with his six-string. Drummer Paul Cole’s razor-tight and adaptable drumming propels the whirlwind of technical finesse forward. There is a lot of heart and soul and a palpable affinity in the individual compositions, which can sometimes escalate into an entertaining, cacophonous frenzy. Here, volume dynamics are also handled subtly from time to time. IATT leave their audience plenty of room for exploration, interpretation, and inspiration. The sixth track "Walk Amongst" proves that this extravagance has heart and soul. The atmospheric saxophone playing and ambient black metal fit together here like a glove. The mixing and mastering, which is beyond reproach, was once again handled by Marcos Cerutti, the Brazilian co-founder of their label, Black Lion Productions.
