Die Debüt-Schwungscheibe "Existence Denied", der Pittsburgh Doom/Death/Hardcore/Sludger STALEMATE OF WILLS, ist mal wieder so ein Highlight, das ich all denjenigen unter euch wärmstens ans Herz legen möchte, die auf ausgewogene und abwechslungsreiche Crossover der vorgenannten Stile stehen. Die Pennsylvania Bad Boys, die erstmals im Jahre 2023 urkundliche Erwähnung fanden, haben in 27:44 Minuten acht durchdringende Post Hardcore Powerpacks erschaffen, die sich in den Gehörgängen festsetzen wie ein Parasit am Körper seines Wirts. Energetische Eruptionen, starke Refrains und ein exzellentes Gitarrenspiel zeugen von einem coolen und abgefratzten Style, den ich mir gerne mal live geben würde! Die musikalische DNA dieser Momentaufnahmen des Wahnsinns zusätzlich in eine leicht rockig-progressive Ausrichtung gepackt, hat mich "Existence Denied" direkt beim ersten Durchlauf gepackt und nicht mehr losgelassen.
Das roh, dreckig und dogmatisch phrasierte Stakkato-Gebell von Front-Reibeisen und Sixstringer Derek Kovcas, dessen Intonation und Stimmfarbe direkt Gefrierbrand hinterlassen, klingt so richtig schön nach nekrotisch-galliger Stacheldraht-Lunge. Mit ordentlich Groove und Attitüde im Blut prügelt der Mann hinter der Schießbude Bob McSherry, dem Auditorium die Ohrwürmer mit dem Vorschlaghammer durchs Trommelfell. Wohingegen der omnipräsente Fourstringer von Jake Morris sämtliches Mobiliar durchs Wohnzimmer hüpfen lässt. Die mitleidlos entseelte Atmosphäre kommt dabei der Spielweise ihrer Landsmänner VALLETTA recht nahe, welche aber vergleichsweise simplifiziert rüberkommt. Und auch wenn die musikalische Ausrichtung des Post Hardcore Trios eine deutlich andere Sprache spricht, als die der Dänen BAEST, hat man im vergangenen Jahr deren Output "Colossal" deutlich anhören können, dass der rockige Aspekt im Death Metal durchaus seine Daseinsberechtigung hat. In eiskalten, stringenten Fahrwassern gehalten und mit einer ausgewogenen, abwechslungsreichen Songauswahl ausgestattet, hieven sich STALEMATE OF WILLS mit ihrem Erstschlag "Existence Denied" bereits auf ein verdammt hohes Level. Da kann man nur gespannt sein auf das, was da noch kommen mag!

The debut flywheel "Existence Denied" by the Pittsburgh doom/death/hardcore/sludgeers STALEMATE OF WILLS is yet another standout release that I highly recommend to all of you who enjoy a well-balanced and diverse blend of the aforementioned styles. The Pennsylvania Bad Boys, first documented in 2023, have created eight piercing post-hardcore powerhouses in 27:44 minutes that lodge themselves in your ears like a parasite on its host’s body. Energetic eruptions, strong choruses, and excellent guitar work testify to a cool and gritty style that I’d love to experience live! With the musical DNA of these snapshots of madness additionally packaged in a slightly rock-progressive direction, "Existence Denied" grabbed me right from the first listen and never let go.
The raw, dirty, and dogmatically phrased staccato bark of frontman and six-stringer Derek Kovcas, whose intonation and vocal timbre leave you with frostbite, sounds just like a necrotic, gall-filled barbed-wire lung. With plenty of groove and attitude in his blood, the man behind the drum kit, Bob McSherry, hammers the earworms through the audience’s eardrums with a sledgehammer. Meanwhile, Jake Morris’s omnipresent fourstringer makes all the furniture bounce around the living room. The mercilessly bleak atmosphere comes quite close to the style of their compatriots VALLETTA, though it comes across as comparatively simplified. And even though the musical direction of this post-hardcore trio speaks a distinctly different language than that of the Danish band BAEST, their 2025 release "Colossal" clearly demonstrated that the rock-influenced aspect of death metal certainly has its place. Kept in icy-cold, compelling waters and equipped with a balanced, varied selection of songs, STALEMATE OF WILLS have already hoisted themselves to a damn high level with their debut "Existence Denied". One can only look forward with anticipation to what may yet come!
